Marquette wears down #22 Wisconsin The Marquette Golden Eagles forced 16 turnovers from the Wisconsin Badgers, a team known for taking care of the ball, in their 61-58 victory Saturday night. The Golden Eagles (7-1) got a game high scoring performance from Jerel McNeal who scored 26 points on 10-18 shooting along with seven assists and two steals. Lazar Hayward didn’t have his best shooting night, but his 13 rebounds complimented his nine points. Wisconsin (6-2) shot only 53.8% from the free throw line in the three point loss, but got 14 points from Trevon Hughes and 11 from Keaton Nankivil.
Turner leads Buckeyes upset over #7 Notre Dame Evan Turner scored a game high 28 points on 11-16 shooting as the Ohio State Buckeyes remained unbeaten with their 67-62 victory over the Irish of Notre Dame. Turner’s season best scoring effort was complimented by his perfect 6-6 from the free throw line, 10 rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Center B.J. Mullens engitned his presence off the Buckeye bench nearly tallying a triple-double in 18 minutes of pkay with 11 points and seven rebounds. Notre Dame (6-2) finally got All-American Luke Harangody back from his battle with pneumonia. Harangody didn’t miss a beat scoring 25 points on 10-25 shooting and 16 rebounds. Kyle McAlarney struggled with his shooting stroke missing on all six of his three point attempts, finishing 3-11 for the game.
Cincinnati stays unbeaten at home taking down UAB The Cincinnati Bearcats defended their home court again, the fifth time this year, as they knocked off the Blazers from UAB 87-80. Leading the way for the Bearcats was forward Mike Williams who was 11-14 from the free throw line and finished with 17 points. UAB fell to 5-3 on the year, but had three scorers reach double digit scoring. Robert Vaden scored 23, Lawrence Kinnard had 22 points and nine rebounds, and Paul Delaney III had 13. Cincinnati’s victory came from their ability to get to their free throw line more than their opponent. The Bearcats got to the line more than twice as many times (37-16).
Patented Pittsburgh D keys win over Vermont The Pittsburgh Panthers left the Catamounts of Vermont helpless forcing them to shoot 25% from the field in their 80-51 victory Saturday night. Pitt (8-0) got a game high 28 points, nine rebound, three assist, three steal effort from last year’s Big East Come Back Player of the Year in Sam Young. DeJuan Blair recorded a double-double with 13 points and 16 boards, while point man Levance Fields added eight assists. Tyrell Biggs also had a solid game with 10 points and seven rebounds. For Vermont, they simply got dominated in every facet of the game, being outrebounded and out assisted, with more turnovers and less steals than the reigning Big East Champions.
Providence edges Rhode Island Weyinmi Efejuku scored a season-high 21 points and pulled down 8 rebounds as edgding in-state rival Rhode Island, 66-65, on Saturday. Marshon Brooks added 14 points and Geoff McDermott hit two crucial free throws with 15 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Friars (6-3). Jimmy Baron and Kahiem Seawright each scored 18 points and had 7 rebounds for Rhode Island. Providence never led by more than three and trailed for much of the second half. The game was tight from start to finish, and neither team led by more than three during a fast-paced first period that featured 15 lead changes. Baron had a chance to win the game for Rhode Island (6-3), but his baseline jumper with five seconds to go rimmed out.
