Big East Football Week #6 Recap

The Big East Week #6 recap is below. After you review what happened this past weekend and check out the 2008 Big East football standings, be sure to take a look at our Big East Power Rankings!

Pittsburgh 26 - #10 South Florida 21

LeSean McCoy rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns, as Pittsburgh shocked the No. 10 ranked South Florida Bulls in Tampa, Fla.

McCoy, the nation’s leading freshman rusher a year ago, scored on a six yard run in the second quarter to give the Panthers their first lead of the game, and on a three yard run in the fourth quarter for the final margin of victory.

Quarterback Bill Stull added 228 yards passing for the Panthers, who have won four straight games, and sit atop the Big East standings at 2-0.

For the Bulls, it is another loss against an unranked opponent (their fourth in the last two seasons), as they fall to 5-1 on the year. Matt Grothe threw for 129 yards and a touchdown in defeat.

Both teams have a bye in Week 7.

Cincinnati 33 - Marshall 10

Chazz Anderson- making his first career start- threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, as the Bearcats won their second straight road game against a non-BCS opponent.

Anderson, a red-shirt freshman that started the year as the third stringer on the depth chart, threw 158 yards and Jacob Ramsey added 99 on the ground. Cincinnati’s first score of the game came after a Connor Barwin blocked punt resulted in a Bearcats safety.

The only BCS team yet to play a conference game, Cincinnati hosts Rutgers this weekend in Big East play. Kickoff is set for noon.

West Virginia 24 - Rutgers 17

Pat White threw for two touchdowns- but for the second straight game, left early with an injury- as West Virginia beat Rutgers at home 24-17.

Despite being out gained by the Mountaineers 333 yards to 270, Rutgers had a chance late in the game to steal a victory on the road. The Scarlet Knights stopped a Jarrett Brown fourth down run, getting the ball back with 1:54 left at the West Virginia 45 yard line. But after an incompletion and dropped ball set up a 4 th and 5, quarterback Mike Teel’s pass was batted down by Scooter Berry to preserve the West Virginia victory.

The Mountaineers improved to 3-2 on the year, while Rutgers falls to 1-4. Both teams stay in conference again in Week 7, as Rutgers travels to Cincinnati and West Virginia hosts Syracuse.

North Carolina 38 - Connecticut 12

Donald Brown- the nation’s leading rusher- had 161 yards on 33 carries, but it wasn’t enough to erase countless UConn miscues, as North Carolina beat up, and beat down the Huskies at home.

Bruce Carter blocked three punts for the Tar Heels- including one recovered by Matt Merletti for a touchdown- and Zach Frazer, making his first career start for the Huskies threw three interceptions, as UConn lost its first game of the season.

Converted safety Shawn Draughn rushed for 109 yards and a score for the Tar Heels, which improved to 4-1 on the season. Because so many of the Huskies turnovers either led directly to touchdowns or a short field for the North Carolina offense, the Tar Heels time of possession was only a little under 24 minutes.

The Huskies, which have played six games in the seasons first six weeks, get a much needed bye, as several starters were nagged by injuries in this one.

They return to the field Oct. 18, as they travel to New Jersey to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
