Louisville Cardinals vs Florida International Panthers Football Recap

Florida International 24, Louisville 17

The last time the Hilton name was this prominent on national television, Conrad Hilton was rejecting Don Draper’s advertising campaign on Mad Men.

He’s not an iconic hotelier, but Florida International superstar receiver and kick returner T.Y. Hilton certainly snatched the national spotlight last Friday by dazzling and dominating a Big East foe. Hilton’s open-field brilliance and lethal speed enabled Florida International to waltz into Louisville, Kentucky, and clip the homestanding Cardinals. Hilton collected an FIU-record 201 receiving yards to lead the Golden Panthers and ascendant head coach Mario Cristobal to their first victory over a BCS conference opponent.

FIU quarterback Wesley Carroll completed 14-of-21 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, FIU also received the performances it needed to pull off the program-affirming win. The Golden Panthers got 11 tackles from Jonathan Cyprien, plus an eight-tackle night from do-everything defender Winston Fraser, whose pick-six complemented Hilton’s brilliance.

Louisville quarterback Will Stein threw for 349 yards on 30-of-43 passing to go along with two scores and one interception. Stein competed well, but his diminutive stature in the pocket created several tipped passes that blunted the momentum of several Cardinal drives. Louisville’s stable of offensive talent just wasn’t as dynamic as Hilton and the rest of the FIU crew.

Fraser’s interception and score got FIU on the board early. The 71-yard pick-six return came at the 7:27 mark of the first quarter, setting an important tone for the rest of the evening at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. Fraser made the first big play of the evening, throwing down a standard that Hilton would not only match, but eventually exceed.

Not too long after that pick-six, the Golden Panthers – leading 7-3 – encountered a 3 rd-and-4 deep in their own territory, when Carroll found Hilton on a slant that perfectly carved up UL’s misaligned secondary. Hilton took the angle that shot him past the helping safeties and down the field for a 74-yard touchdown to put FIU up 14-3. Louisville was left reeling, and while the Cardinals eventually battled back, they couldn’t fully overcome the emotional impact of that particular strike from the defending Sun Belt Conference champions.

Indeed, with the memory of his 74-yard touchdown still fresh in the minds of Louisville’s defensive eleven, Hilton again pounced with 9:28 left in the second quarter, getting behind the UL secondary for an 83-yard touchdown to push FIU's lead to 21-3. Louisville scored a touchdown before halftime to make the score 21-10, and the Cardinals eventually pulled within seven points with 1:49 left in regulation. However, an earlier defensive stand by the Golden Panthers near the 10-minute mark of the fourth quarter proved to be instrumental in the visitors’ milestone victory. Louisville, down 24-10 at the time, had second and short near the FIU 10. However, three running plays netted zero yards, and with that bold stand, the Golden Panthers affirmed their superiority in the trenches. It was that stand which prevented Louisville from getting the two second-half touchdowns it needed to create overtime. When UL scored with 1:49 to go, the Cardinals gained a window-dressing score, not a tying one. FIU recovered the ensuing onside kick and then pinned UL inside its own 5-yard line on a punt in the final minutes. The Cardinals never made a credible downfield foray, and the pizza party at Papa John’s was on for Florida International.

Thanks to T.Y. Hilton.
