Hibbert’s 25 and 13 lands Georgetown back in tournament championship

After going scoreless the day before in the victory against Villanova, Georgetown center Roy Hibbert saw the ball early and often, and West Virginia was helpless defending the big guy. Hibbert turned in 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead Georgetown past West Virginia, 72-55, and into the Big East tournament championship game for the second straight year.

Da’Sean Butler led WVU with 16 points, but the Mountaineers were unable to erase a 12-point half time deficit. WVU trailed by as little as four in the second half, but would get no further. The Mountaineers went 7:30 during the latter stages of the second half without scoring, and the Hoyas stormed away down the stretch, leading by as much as 20.

Joe Alexander, who dominated UConn with 34 points and had 22 against Providence, was held to just 12 points on only 5-of-16 shooting. Facing the Big East and nation’s top team in field goal percentage defense, Alexander never got going, missing six of his first eight shot attempts.

Georgetown will advance to the Big East tournament championship game for the second year in a row on Saturday night. It was the 22 nd time in the 2007-08 season that Georgetown has held their opponent to 60 points or fewer.
